Prospect Interview - Mason Langenbrunner

A season that took longer than expected gave us a rushed offseason and within the span of a month we had the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and began a free agency frenzy where the Bruins lost key pieces in Torey Krug and former Captain Zdeno Chara. The Boston Bruins made four selections in the draft including Mason Langenbrunner, the son of Jamie Langenbrunner the Boston Bruins Director of Player Development. With the addition of Mason, the Langenbrunners added another piece to the Boston Bruins Organization. Mason is eighteen years old and was born on September 14th, 2002. Langenbrunner is a right shot defenseman standing tall at six foot two and weighing in at one-hundred sixty-five pounds. He is a big body presence on the Blue line and adds even more size to our Defensive prospects.

Getting a look at the stat sheet shows us a little more about him and his past hockey experiences. Last season he played for Eden Prairie High of the USHS-MN where he put up five goals, fourteen assists, and nineteen points in twenty-five games played(Data from Hockey-Reference). Langenbrunner was the second highest scoring defenseman and the sixth highest scoring player on the roster for the 2019-2020 season. This season he is playing in the USHL as a part of the Sioux City Musketeers, and the following season he will be attending Harvard University as a member of the hockey team.

During an exclusive interview with Mason Langenbrunner I wanted to get to know him better, to see what his goals are, and to learn more about his game. I asked him a series of questions and he answered accordingly. When asked who his current favorite Boston Bruins player is, he answered with Karson Kuhlman. When asked who his all-time favorite Boston Bruin was, he answered with Tim Thomas. I wanted to get to know his game better and when I asked him what his favorite part of his game was he told me, “My hockey sense and also my skating”. Growing up around the game definitely helps Langenbrunners' hockey sense a lot making it a strong point in the game. He also stated that he feels the best way he could make an impact on the Bruins roster was, “I think I can eventually help the Bruins as a reliable defenseman who can play solid minutes and also put up points”. When asked who he modeled his game after he told me, “Brandon Carlo and Seth Jones”. Both are big defenders for Boston and Columbus, especially Jones who ranks seventh in minutes logged among defenders. Another fact you may not have known is that Mason Langenbrunner was on stage when the Boston Bruins made the selection of Uhro Vaakanainen with the 17th pick of the 2017 first round. I asked

him what it was like to see that unfold in person. He answered, “It was an amazing experience. I got to see how a draft really works and also got to meet some high end players”. Now him and Vaakanainen both are under

the Boston Bruins system. Maybe one day we could see the two together as a defensive pairing.

Joining an original six hockey team is not something everybody gets to say they did. Especially getting drafted by a team of such high caliber is not something very common. Being one of four people selected out of hundreds of other players is a special feeling. Mason Langenbrunner seems to be very happy to join the Boston Bruins and a good morale already starts him off great. It should be a fun journey seeing him work to reach the final roster of the Boston Bruins.
